Why Filter Your Water?

Is your water just H2O?
Does it have a funny taste or smell?

In the U.K., we often take clean water from our taps for granted. But just because your water looks clean doesn't mean it is clean. Public water utilities are required to provide water that does not contain pollutants above specified levels. Although they usually provide good quality water, these water treatment plants are not always effective at removing contamination that may harm public health. Sometimes, certain pollutants, like rust or lead, can enter your water after it has left the water treatment plant.
Boiling your water isn't always the answer. In fact, unless the contamination is caused by bacteria or a virus, boiling your water can make the problem worse by concentrating the pollutant in the reduced volume of water left in the kettle.

Every source of water has a unique quality. Rain water, well water, river, lake and spring water are all dependent on the journey they have taken. Spring water may filter through thousands of feet of clay or mineral beds and pick up valuable nutrients.

Once water is polluted with chemicals or various other wastes, it can not only have directly harmful effects but its life energy is diminished. As rain water falls through the atmosphere it encounters the thick band of pollution that now encircles the earth. It picks up lead, smoke, dust, germs and a host of other chemicals. Drinking water may originate from polluted melted snow or rain water runoff and go through agricultural areas with animal excrement and using poisonous sprays, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, soil fumigants and nitrates. There is a strong chance that the next water you drink will have passed through someone's sewer or an industrial conduit filled with wastes, poisons and bacteria. Most cities add chlorine to disinfect this water and some add sodium fluoride to supposedly prevent tooth decay. All these will be filtered out to bring you pure drinking water to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Health problems caused by polluted water

Fatigue can be caused by chemical toxins in the water. If the liver and kidneys, which are the main waste filters, are working to eliminate a high level of chemical toxins, a general feeling of lethargy can result. The kidneys are preoccupied with the elimination of chemical poisons, they have little energy left for normal, healthful activity. Again, fatigue is the result.

The thyroid gland Chlorine and Fluorine are known to damage the thyroid gland. If our thyroid gland is under performing, we can suffer from many undesirable symptoms including overweight, fatigue, dry skin, infertility, painful menstrual periods, muscle weakness and cramps, hair loss, recurrent infections, constipation, depression, intolerance to cold and more.

Infertility This can be caused by an underactive thyroid. Also, women who are on the pill, excrete excess oestrogen into the water supply. This can cause low sperm counts in males and hormone imbalance problems in females. This is a major factor in today's infertility crisis.

Parasites It is not necessary to travel to far-flung countries to pick up parasites from the water supply. Approximately 1 in 6 people, if tested, are shown to have one or more parasites. Contaminated drinking water is a common source.

Immune function can be seriously depleted by impure water, as it is a source of chronic exposure and hard work for our detoxification systems. We can then be made ill by problems that we should be able to cope with. For example, we may retain mercury from water that we should other wise be able to eliminate.

Heavy metal toxicity Lead, mercury and copper are among the heavy metals that can be found in drinking water. These can all have a profoundly detrimental effect on health. They can cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore cause mental symptoms. Lead toxicity can cause behavioural problems and aggression in children. Lead is teratogenic, literally 'monster-forming' and can result in foetal malformations. It competes with zinc and can therefore cause zinc deficiency. Zinc is required for all body processes. Copper also competes with zinc in the body. Excess copper can cause tearfulness, depression, heavy periods, post-natal depression and contribute to poor metal function and dyslexia.

Cancer The ultimate degenerative disease is caused as a result of the breakdown of the body's systems and not by a problem in one isolated area where a tumour starts growing. Lack of clean water is undoubtedly a contributory factor in the development of these tragic diseases. Hormone related cancers, such as breast, ovarian and endometrial are escalating frighteningly rapidly and are, in part, attributed to excess chemical oestrogens.

How can clean water benefit the body?

Healthy bowels and constipation Our body requires water to function. If our intake is insufficient then we will re-absorb water from the colon. This is the same as drinking toxic water. It causes toxicity, headaches and fatigue in the body and causes the stool to be dry, hard and difficult to pass. Drinking plenty of clean water is a major step to good bowels.

Digestion The body will never function at optimum without good digestion. Water softens foods and dissolves many components.

Skin problems and acne The skin is a major organ of elimination. If we drink sufficient water, it improves the elimination of waste through the urine and bowels so that less needs to be eliminated through the skin.

How much should you drink? The rough guide is 6-8 glasses a day (UK Food Standards Agency). This should come from pure water, or some pure water made into fruit or herb teas. Beer, coke, fizzy drinks, coffee, tea and alcohol cannot be included in this daily figure. Most of these actually have a dehydrating effect. Drink plenty of clean water to improve and maintain your health.
